I've often said that regardless of the sport you're playing, if you are not on you're feet, you're not in the game.
This applies to The Gridiron, Ice Hockey, Basketball, Baseball, Tennis, Golf, Cricket, Soccer, Rugby, Australian Rules Football and almost any other sport (Except perhaps rowing). If you're lying down, there's someone who doesn't have an opponent to worry about.

I've always felt the criticism on William Jackson (Bengals DB) for that play was unfair. He very clearly thought Evans had pushed Bell out of bounds and was trying to avoid getting a late hit penalty. They were up 17-3 at that point, and a late hit would have given Pittsburg the ball at the 5 yard line. In fact, Bell was SO close to being out of bounds that the refs likely would have called that if he had hit him.
