In this MUNCHIES special, we meet owner Joe Cooke, great-grandson of Robert Cooke, who opened London’s first pie shop in 1862. Joe shows us how to prepare a proper plate of pie and mash, complete with an eel and parsley sauce known as liquor.

I didn’t think this could get any more British but then he went and had the old bob splosh 😂😂😂
Also … found this from BBC archive … about the East End and it's love of the fish and eel… fascinating. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaS0EIqESc4
FIRST … this gentleman is a national treasure … what a doll. I love him. But very much need to know why anyone would ever jelly an eel? Look, I'm not schived out by it, but as I can assess (without trying it) it's boiled eel in plain gelatin. I can't think it has much flavor except for boiled eel and the mouthfeel is … well … unique. Why would they do this? When did this happen? why does it go with what looks like a terribly savory and delicious pie?
Bloody lovely!
Great food – and great people.
I don't know how gently he's holding those pies, but what I do know is that there are absolutely ZERO fingerprints/thumbprints on them! Maybe that's a clue that is necessary to find out EXACTLY -PRECISELY* how gently that man was holding those pies.
I'm not eating that shit lol
Какая гадость эта ваша заливная рыба!
Did he say “Bob Splosh”?
Are they still around
Did he say "it stings like buggary" ? That's quite a mental picture there ….
Love the old-school atmosphere, the personality of all of the workers. But, honestly the food other then the pie looks horrible and bland. Eel jelly…..no thanks
crazy when you see what japan does with eels and then you see this.
Jellied Eels
English tastes buds must have a higher rating cause no way that's good for you
The World: let’s try jelly-ing some fruit.
Britain: have you tried jellied dicks ?
The British…….the beauty of their women and the taste of their food took the British Empire to the farthest corners of the world.
In search of anything better.
England is good, simple as.
These restaurants are dying out one at a time just like Swiss Chalet. They catered to older white people and only use salt and pepper for seasoning lol Those days are over!
After rewatching this same vid when it came to my feed on facebook, I now understand why everyone hates FB. While everyone here talks about how gently he's holding those pies, comments on FB were toxic AF, mostly attacking English food and English people while everyone here is chill and joking around. Never coming back on FB again.
Ah yes, famous british cusine
looks incredibly delectable.
I would definitely eat that
Looks terrible lol🤣
Uncle please leave some charisma for the rest of us
Honestly, i really want to try a plate. I wonder if its easy to make at home
God that looks horrible.
That food is just sad 😂
Today marks my annual reminder that I have no idea how soft he's holding those pies.
Just watched baby reindeer. Crazy it was in the first ep. Watched this vid at least 3 years ago too, came bacm for some reason
Does not look tasty but so many years on the business means that it must be really good. I would like to travel to lo do to eat there
Not sure about the jellied eel, but I wouldn’t mind giving this man’s plate a try.
No bullshit no special masala only love and passion for food love it
When you like food that looks like vomit and tastes like fart.
iT'S GONE AND CLOSED FOR GOOD.
With all due respect, all inns, restaurants, pubs and similar are the oldest in the London or Britain, context depended.
