I took a recent trip to Poland and it is indeed very affordable compared to many Western European countries, Portugal is a close second in affordability probably.
The one thing to consider for me was public transportation and distance from the USA.

Some of these places look amazing but are ready dangerous for LGBT travelers. Not gonna stop m3 from checking them out, so any advice for a gay guy visiting, particularly the balkans?
I was living in Slovenia for over 6 months as a student during Erasmus.
As a student, it's so much cheaper than living in Poland. The government was paying students for meals in restaurants (€3 in fancy restaurant was considered expensive). Even dormitory was cheaper than in Poland. I am Pole and I know how cheap is my country. However, the cost of living in Slovenia blew my mind.
We are going there again this year.

Costa Rica is absolutely not budget friendly
Cool places, but not on a budget at all! For European people Croatia is raelly not cheap. Since they introduced the Euro in January 2023 the costs went up and Croatia is as pricy as Italy. Athens is not cheap neither… I do not know what Americans consider cheap but if you want to live cheap in Europe you need to visit lands like Romania, Macedonia, Serbia and some parts of Portugal.
Great video! Love the US road trip. We did maybe half of it on two trips with our kids in COVID. We never would have done a road trip like that if we were flying. Those are amazing places – Zion being our favorite as well.
